On this week’s Capitol Report segment for News9, the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City, analyst Patrick B. McGuigan delved into controversies over the presidential election results. He said President-elect Donald Trump was “irresponsible” to assert that 3 million undocumented immigrants voted.

However, McGuigan pointed to Old Dominion University Professor Jesse Richman’s much lower estimate that as many as 800,000 such votes could have been cast – far less than the vote difference between Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

McGuigan observed the Green Party’s push for a recount in three states in Trump’s came after the Green nominee spent that last two years trying to defeat Clinton. Green Party hints at an election returns “hack” sufficient to change the outcome seem implausible, but Russian attempts to influence U.S. politics are nothing new.

In discussion with reporter Alex Cameron, McGuigan encouraged caution in either embracing or dismissing assertions of voter fraud, because illegal voting is a constant in American politics. The CapitolBeatOK editor suggested that this year’s experience may suggest that use of easy-to-scan paper ballots – as is the case in Oklahoma – is preferable to electronic voting, in an era when Internet insecurity is a given.
