The second annual ”Chalk the Walk” Chalk Art Festival, hosted by Family Builders, will be held on Saturday, June 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Plaza Arts District, 1726 N.W.16 St., in midtown Oklahoma City.

The sidewalk competition is open to artists of all ages and experience levels. Admission is free to the public. Students and professional artists can register to participate for $20. Groups and families competing together with children under 12 can register for $30.

The Chalk the Walk will include hands-on activities for the whole family such as face painting, hair painting, temporary tattoos, duct tape jewelry making, preschooler’s storytime and hopscotch.

Jabee Williams, Dancers from Everything Goes Dance Studio, and Em and The Mother Superiors will provide live entertainment for the event.

Family Builders Executive Director, Laura Gamble said, “This is a great family event and there is nothing else in the Oklahoma City area like it. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate families on Father’s Day weekend than to invite creative, local individuals and families to use their artistic skills to create artwork on the sidewalks in the Plaza District.”

Celebrity judge Lance West from KFOR Channel 4 will be joined by local Plaza District art connoisseurs to select the winning contestants. Prizes will be awarded based on various age groups.

Participating restaurants and food trucks will include Big Truck Tacos, Heo’s Kitchen, Wild Al’s, Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, and Hawk’s Hot Dogs as well as Plaza District merchants The Mule, Urban WineWorks, Saints Irish Pub and Pie Junkie.

“We invite all area artists — or budding artists — to register for Chalk the Walk 2013,” said Gamble. “It is a unique and rewarding way to participate in our work of preventing child abuse and family violence.”

All proceeds from the event will directly benefit Family Builders, further supporting their mission of strengthening Oklahoma families in order to prevent child abuse and neglect, and other family violence.

Shannon Davis, Development Director for Family Builder said, “We are pleased to be partnering with the Plaza District this year to host our fun, family-friendly event in one of Oklahoma City’s most hip and happening venues on N.W. 16 St. between Classen and Penn. You won’t want to miss the fun this year.

“Artists of all ages and experience levels are welcome to come try their hand at creating a sidewalk chalk masterpiece.”

Since 1976, Family Builders has responded to the needs of families from every neighborhood in the greater Oklahoma City area, Family Builders serves approximately 1,500 parents and children each year through its many family violence prevention programs.

Parents and families may self-refer or be referred to Family Builders by the courts, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services’ Child Support Enforcement, OKDHS Child Welfare, attorneys and other court authorities.

Davis added, “Registration for chalk artists or aspiring chalk artists, or even just families wanting to come do something cool together to help prevent child abuse and family violence is still open.

“We will be taking walk-up registrations on the day of the event beginning at 7 a.m., but it helps us if people register early for the chalk art competition.”

Family Builders receives funding from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, United Way of Central Oklahoma, service fees, and private donations.
