In rapid response to the devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, Rotarians in Oklahoma City responded with generous hearts and practical gifts.

In just a couple of days last week, members of Oklahoma City’s downtown Rotary Club raised several thousand dollars to benefit Haitians suffering in aftermath of the disaster.

The Club had committed a $2,000 line item at a regular meeting, then scheduled a special event for last Monday at Bricktown Brewery. With a $500 boost from the Bricktown Rotary’s Robert Shapiro, Rotary brought in $4,270 that will go directly to the international group’s relief efforts for the people of Haiti.

What was billed as the “Bricktown Rotary Celebrity Server” fundraiser was held early Monday evening. Celebrity servers include Joleen Chaney and Bobbie Miller of News Channel 4, Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips, and former city Fire Chief Jon Hansen.

Peter Fulmer and state Rep. Joe Dorman were among organizers of the event. Joining the throng supporting the charitable event at Bricktown Brewery’s upstairs room were Terri Cooper, Mike McAullife, Dena Drabek, Bob Hedrick, Wade Stewart, Rick Grellner and other community leaders.
