Members of the Chin Baptist Church downtown will commission a local mission team bound for Malaysia in a service to be held Jan. 31, church leaders said.
The team, comprising mostly members of First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City (FBCOKC), will work with Chin refugees in Kuala Lumpur Feb. 3-13.
First Baptist Church, 1201 N Robinson, will conduct the commission process at 10:30 a.m.
The Chin are one of a number of Burmese people groups being persecuted by the ruling military junta in Myanmar, also known as Burma.
Most are persecuted for being Christian and most are Baptists.
The Chin Church, which meets at FBCOKC, now numbers 100-120 congregants.
The mission team, led by chaplain and former missionary Beth Ogburn, will work with Chin refugees in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team will also help refugees adjust to life in a new country and prepare for eventual relocation to the U.S. Team members include medical, educational, media and counseling specialists.
The church team plans to help the Chin with medical needs, schooling, counseling and assimilation into American culture.
Ogburn and husband, FBCOKC senior pastor Dr. Tom Ogburn, were Southeast Asia missionaries for six years.
