Monday, in downtown Oklahoma City, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move nearer to the “beloved community” that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned. Celebrations were held all over town the entire weekend to pay homage to Dr. King.
"I came out today to support the work that Dr. King did for our country," said parade attendee Karl Willett. “It is a tradition for me to celebrate and remember everything he set forth to change this country and put it in a new direction.” Willett says he attends the parade every year, regardless of what the unpredictable Oklahoma weather is like.
Thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate, particularly on Broadway in the area of historic Automobile Alley. The parade lasted for more than two hours while visitors, young and old waved in excitement and celebration. These annual events are held to recognize the birthday of civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
